We, the members of the San Jose State University's Vietnamese Student Association, are joining together to voice our objection against the wrongful acts by the San Jose Police Department (SJPD), which include, but are not limited to: police brutality and power abuse. The most recent case unveiled in the news was Phuong Ho, an SJSU international student from Vietnam, who was apprehended in the cruelest form possible: wrongful use of brutal force. Four police officers arrived at Ho's apartment, exerting inhuman force upon Ho after miscommunication due to Ho’s thick accent. The police reportedly entered Ho's home, and brutally beat Ho with a baton and taser gun while he was handcuffed and helplessly lying on the floor.

Unfortunately, too many similar incidents have occurred in the past, and it is steadfastly becoming a repetitive issue. It is time for these occurrences to end; to put an end to police brutality towards the community of all ethnicities. Hence, a protest will take place to raise awareness of this issue, as well as hold these officers accountable for their imprudent actions. The protest shall take place next Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 4:30PM, in front of San Jose City Hall. VSA will be protesting on behalf of the actions that were taken place during Ho’s apartment to assure that an event like this will never happen at any given place or time again. We ask you to support our cause and help us spread the word throughout your community to make sure these unlawful acts do not occur again.

Protest Against Police Brutality

E-mail Print PDF

Police BrutalityAs you may have heard, there was a Vietnamese international student at San Jose State University named Phuong Ho who was unfortunately the victim of the latest police excessive use of force upon yet another member of the Vietnamese Community. There has been too many incidents, too many apologies from the Police Department, nevertheless, we are still witnessing the status quo. As Vietnamese-Americans, we do not want this disheartening trend to continue. It is time for you, us and our community, to put an end to this. We, the VSA at SJSU, will be protesting next Tuesday at San Jose City Hall. We truly believe this is a great indication that our community is demonstrating a united front and determined to put an end to police brutality towards the Community of all ethnicities.

We officers are writing on behalf of all VSA students at our school to inform that we are planning to stage a protest next Tuesday - November 3, 2009 starting at 4pm. We ask you to support our cause and help us spread the word out to your Community. Thank you very much and we look forward seeing you guys.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to make it to the general meeting on Thursday, Oct. 22, here are the full details on what's going down on NOVEMBER 11, 2009.

We will be having a Friendly Mixer with the Chinese Cultural Club at Capaldi Park from 11am - 4pm. We have planned a BBQ Potluck and some super fun activities for the day. These activities will include: Tag-Football, Relay Races, and a Scavenger Hunt. Also, I would like to remind everyone that since it is a POTLUCK, we would appreciate it if anyone who is planning to come to contribute $5.00 so that we could buy the needed items and food for everyone. Also, if anyone has friends that they would like to bring along, that is fine too, just be sure that their name is also on the guest list and they also pay. Please have the money ready for us as soon as possible; preferably the next meeting. If anyone has difficulties coming up with the money, please do not hesitate to ask or contact one of the Publicity Officers to give you other alternatives. Health Fair
This time the community really need your help. Our VSA has agreed to help out Asian American Women Alliance (AAWA) for their Health Fair this Sunday October 4,2009. We will be there to help out with the registration process and prepare lunch for all attendees. Your participation is greatly needed as without your help the Health Fair would be hard to achieve success. We have decided to split the work into different shifts in order to make it convenient for everyone. The early morning shift will be from 7am to 12pm and the afternoon shift to be from 11:00am to 4pm

The event will start from 9AM - 3:00PM. Last year , there were 600 people came, so this year we really need your help.

Dress code: white shirt or t-shirt, black pant, shoes (black jeans only!, no sexy clothes, no flip-flops , sandals or high heels.)

Please tell us whether or not you're coming in order for the event organizer to have your name printed on a name tag beforehand.

Ask us if you have any questions.

And please indicate the shift that you want. It's okay if you chose to do the whole day.
